What I do ~~ My Thoughts
My current work combines collage elements from collected papers gathered from the Paris Metro and other locations in and around Paris and transfer print imagery from my French grade school papers and other family documents.
I tear, cut and mix the gathered papers to create something new. The materials are organized into combinations that give the viewer the opportunity to see discarded elements in a new light; no longer only as items which were mass produced, consumed and then discarded.
My purpose is not to use papers that are in perfect condition. The papers are used as I find them and show the wear and tear of natural elements from where they came. I include these imperfections to give a sense of immediacy to the overall work as well as a textural quality.
My working process precludes any advance planning except in the formulation of the type of paper gathered, the amount of paper available, and the size in which these will ultimately be used. Many times the color of the avaible papers dictate the color palette of the work. Other times, the textural qualities of the paper's backside offers more possibilities.
I gather the papers, separate layers if they exist, and discover those elements that will unify a work. Unpredictability is an essential part of the process. My compositions are abstract with a narrative only appearing after the fact, as if by accident or quite subconsiously, whether it is in the juxtaposition of text or imagery.
